COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING DIRECTOR
Job Purpose
The Communications and Marketing Director (CMD) plays a strategic role at Society for Family Health (SFH) and is critical to the long term sustainability of SFH’s health impact in Zambia.
The CMD is responsible for planning, development and implementation of all SFH’s strategic priorities in marketing, communications and public relations activities, both external and internal as well as influencing future strategic direction in these areas. The Communications and Marketing Director will support the Executive Director and senior management team in furthering institutional development and service integration priorities at SFH. S/he will oversee development and implementation of Social and Behavior Change (SBC) activities in accordance with national standards and project objectives, while ensuring strong linkage between research and communication activities to develop effective messaging using evidence-based decision-making.
S/he also directs the efforts of the Marketing and Communications Manager and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with other functions of SFH. The position has primary working relationships with the Executive Director, Leadership Team, staff of the Marketing/Communications/PR function, and the service provision sites/Regions. The position reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of the SFH Leadership Team.
Primary Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Drives and monitors SFH’s corporate strategy for Marketing and Communication.
  • Leads the coordination of engagement with the Media, Government Ministries/Departments and other external partner organizations.
  • Oversees a Team of Managers and Technical staff to ensure health impact goals are met.
Creates and launches press releases and marketing campaigns.
  • Manages company brand and reputation by leading and developing branding initiatives, internal communications and external media relations.
Ensures compliance with branding and marketing guidelines.
  • Develops an overall SFH communication strategy and executes programs to deliver effective communication objectives throughout the organization and coordinates all SBC and community communications activities.
  • Manages and coordinates all demand creation and SBC work for voluntary medical male circumcision, including campaigns and content, use of human-centered design approaches to prototype and pilot concepts.
  • Provides oversight, direction and supervision of communication related projects.
  • Develops internal publications such as newsletters, releases, planned publications, videos, and special projects that are optimized for search engines as necessary.
Responsible for performance appraisal of Team members
  • Strengthens use of data for decision making in marketing and communication using SFH’s community reporting and feedback system.
Specific Marketing Roles
  • Leads in the development, implementation and management of evidence-based programming that is in line with Population Services International (PSI) best practices, national health plans and strategic plans.
  • Leads the development of annual marketing plans for all products in collaboration with senior management health services and other key Departments across SFH.
  • Directs the implementation of programs based on log frames and contributes to setting annual performance targets.
  • Guides Teams in the execution of relevant project deliverables for all existing SFH projects and helps to design new projects.
  • Develops and manages marketing and communication budgets across all projects.
  • Develops marketing plans for new products, including female condoms.
  • Participates in relevant workshops and meetings organised by Zambia Institute of Marketing ensuring that SFH has a high level of professional standing.
  • Strengthens relationships with key stakeholders in health, including those in social marketing.
  • Leads marketing and strategy review meetings on a regular basis.
  • Provides oversight, direction and supervision of marketing related projects
Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in an area related to Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Public Health (Health Promotion).
  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years work experience at Senior Management level.
  • Highly collaborative style, experience in developing and implementing marketing strategies.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • Experience in applying appropriate and effective social and behavior change theories and methodologies to build marketing programs.
  • Experience in implementing new approaches in consumer insight generation and analysis.
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communication discussions at both, strategic and tactical levels.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
  • The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.
Experience in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex NGO entity, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and Donor communications.
