Finance and Administrative Officer at Operation Eyesight Universal , Lusaka, Zambia

Operation Eyesight Universal is an international development organization dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness. Since our work began in 1963, we have brought sight-saving treatment to more than 35 million people. Today our work is focused on Zambia, Ghana, Kenya and India – places where blindness can be deadly, especially to those who are very young, old or poor.
 
We work in partnership with medical professionals and community development teams, building essential resources that give all people, including the poorest, access to the help they need. Our focus on high-quality, comprehensive eye care ensures sustainable service for entire communities, with long-lasting results.
 
In Zambia, we work in close cooperation with the Government, premier eye hospitals and other agencies with particular focus on:
  • Elimination of Trachoma through effective implementation of SAFE strategy
  • Human resources development in the eye health sector
  • Infrastructure development – promote and strengthen secondary and tertiary eye care facilities
  • People’s participation in elimination of avoidable blindness.
We are currently looking for a suitable candidate to work closely with the Country Manager and assist him in smooth running of an accurate and up-to-date accounting system and oversee administrative activities to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the country office.  The position carries a reasonable salary to match with the current market rates. Purpose:
To carry out all the responsibilities pertaining to  Finance / Accounting and Administration to ensure smooth and effective functioning of the country office
Line Manages:
None
 
Key Accountabilities:
  • Ensure application of accepted accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information and maintain a reliable accounting system.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures.
  • Ensure statutory compliance.
  • Administrative support to running the country programme. 
Description of Main Responsibilities:
 
Accounting for Income and Expenditure
  • Book keeping
  • Petty cash management
  • Cash advance/ float management
  • Banking
  • Payroll management
  • Monitoring Income and Expenditure
  • Maintain financial records on a daily basis
  • Facilitate audit as per the policy of the Organization
Reporting
  • Collate and prepare financial reports (for Zambia office and Programme expenses)
  • Monthly and Quarterly financial reports
  • Semi-annual  financial reports

Person specification
The role of the Finance and Administrative Officer requires an experienced, energetic and result orientated individual, with a record of demonstrated experience within the NGO sector.
  • The Finance and Administrative Officer should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or equivalent
  • Additional professional qualifications like ACCA/CPA Level 1 will be an added advantage
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a relevant in a relevant field of accounting or Finance in a busy environment
  • Experience in working in INGO an added advantage  
  • Computer literacy skills i.e. (word processing and spreadsheets)
  • Trustworthiness, Stress tolerance, good communication and operational decision making skills
  • Ability to share knowledge and experience plus fluency in English
  • Good Interpersonal and good communication skills
  • Willingness to learn at all times.
