VOLUNTEER in Habitat for Humanity Zambia


Habitat for Humanity Zambia (HFHZ) is part of a world-wide non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry focused on eliminating poverty housing by providing simple, decent houses with families in need and to make shelter a matter of conscience and action. HFHZ  invites people from all walks of life regardless of faith, race, gender or political affiliation to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need.
Habitat for Humanity Zambia now invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Volunteer Media Relations Officer. The specifications for the position are as follows:
Job Title: Volunteer Media Relations Officer
Reporting to: Snr. Resource Mobilisation & Communications Officer
Responsible for: Engaging the media to raise the profile of Habitat for Humanity Zambia
Based in: Lusaka (with in country travel)
Salary range: Commensurate with experience
Status: Short term contract (with a possibility of extension)
Overall purpose of the job: To strengthen the communications and media work of Habitat for Humanity Zambia primarily through communication tools, media and events.

Key Contacts (internal): National Office and Field Office Staff
Principal Responsibilities
  1. To effectively increase awareness of Habitat for Humanity Zambia’s work through various media channels (electronic and print);
  2. To support the implementation of media communication outputs, including drafting Press releases, speeches, news articles and feature stories;
  3. To report on the progress of the communication work plan including support of the delivery of its outputs; releases, their distribution to the target groups and monitor the preparation of press clippings;
  4. To monitor and analyze the media for key developmental issues; including media monitoring and reporting for Habitat for Humanity Zambia
  5. To update and maintain a media diary
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
  • Communications, Public Relations or Journalism Diploma from a recognized institution or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of relevant communications related work experience;
  • Knowledge of Housing, Water and Sanitation Sector;
  • Ability to design communications materials using publisher or similar software;
  • Knowledge of packaging for press will be an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of Child Rights and/or Human Rights;
  • Experience in international work environments;
  • Experience with media an additional asset.
Skills
  • Excellent communication, networking, and inter-personal skills;
  • Innovative and creative thinking in relation to communication,
  • Proven excellence in writing and editing skills in English;
  • Good knowledge of computer tools, web and layout design an asset.

  • Independent professional to contribute to the overall goal of the organization;
  • Flexible, willing to share information and to take up various tasks;
  • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure;
  • Some willingness to travel.
