FIELD DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS (DIRECTOR OF SCHOOLS)

Job Title: Field Deputy Superintendent of Schools (Director of Schools)
Our client, involved in addressing the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in Zambia, is looking to recruit a Field Deputy Superintendent of Schools (Director of Schools).
The Field Deputy will ensure that exemplary leadership is at every one of his or her assigned schools.  The Field Deputy will oversee a portfolio of schools and will be responsible for inspiring, providing consultation, coaching, holding head teachers/ teachers accountable and building the capacity of head teachers to improve the conditions of teaching and learning in each of their schools.
Responsibilities:
The Field Deputies’ responsibilities will include, but are not be limited to the following:
  • Assist in the recruitment, interviewing, selection and matching of outstanding heads and teachers for the client
  • Supervising, Evaluating and Supporting School Heads
  • Lead and supervise an area of schools.
  • Evaluate assigned head teachers for job effectiveness on a termly basis.
  • Conduct regular formal and informal classroom walk-throughs aligned to student achievement and strategic goals.
  • Turn in required data and information about the school on time
  • Focus head teachers on student outcomes and teacher quality while balancing school operational demands. For example, keep teachers accountable in reporting for work, planning lessons, and implementing strategies learnt at training.
  • Coaching, Lesson Observation and Teacher Evaluation
  • Monitoring and evaluating academic/golden goals at each assigned school.
  • Developing an instructional one-on-one coaching plan for each school, weekly coaching, modelling and scaffolding heads/teachers and regular use of assessment to assess progress and practice on goals for improvement.
  • Assist heads in creating a schedule for teacher evaluations/observations so that each teacher is evaluated at least once a term
  • Review evaluations submitted by assigned head teachers on personnel under their supervision.
  • Review evaluations with teachers explaining “glows” and “grows.”
  • Submit termly evaluations to the Deputy Superintendent.
Staff Discipline and Accountability
  • Keeping staff accountable for following the policies and procedures
  • Implement discipline for misconduct or breaking of rules.
Student and Staff Attendance
  • Ensure attendance taking procedures for both students and staff are strictly followed by all assigned Academies
Monthly Head meetings
  • Coordinate, plan, set clear agendas and facilitate effective cluster Head meetings
Getting information from schools with no head teacher
  • Travel every week to visit and meet the needs of these teachers.
Co-Curricular activities/extra-curricular programs
  • Facilitate the creation of programs–work with heads and get final approval through Deputy Superintendent.
Local and National Examinations and End of term data
  • Monitor to ensure that standards for administration and taking examinations are followed.
  • Ensure staff gives accurate end of term data for all students.
Facility and Supply Accountability and Requisition
  • Hold head teachers and teachers accountable for resources and materials
  • Turn in specific requests to the officer in charge.
  • School supplies

Skills and Competences
  • Deep understanding of the Ministry of Education curricular frameworks, education policies, pedagogy and quality classroom materials.
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum for a wide variety of grade levels and subjects; ability to integrate other foreign curricular to drive diversity and improvement of student achievement.
  • Motivates, inspires and move other staff to action to achieve goals.
  • Strong knowledge of high-quality instructional practices and the ability to lead others to implement these practices consistently across classrooms and school sites.
  • Ability to serve as a coach and mentor, helping staff to develop the skills needed at sustainably high levels.

  • Deep understanding of the organization’s school system environment and commitment to improve student achievement.
  • Passionately believes that all students can learn.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors and/or Master’s degree in Education, School administration or related field.
  • Ten or more years of relevant experience with an outstanding track record as a school head teacher or equivalent.
