The mandate of Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) is to grow the value of Rio Tinto by discovering or acquiring resources that can increase future cash-flows. Exploration and discovery have been the driving force behind our business for nearly 150 years. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
We have built a strong technical team in Zambia, which is undertaking the safe exploration of our portfolio of projects as well as the identification and evaluation of new opportunities. Current work programmes include geological mapping, geochemical soil and stream sediment sampling, airborne and ground geophysics and drilling; complemented with community and environmental characterisation work.
An exciting opportunity exists for a Project Manager to lead the multi-disciplinary project team executing this program. You will be leading the planning and execution of the geoscientific work programme together with HSEC and operational support over two or more project areas. It is essential that you have rights to work locally as the role will be 4 week on site and 2 weeks off rotation in the field.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Programme Manager Zambia, with responsibilities including:
Identify and apply appropriate exploration techniques and technology (e.g. geophysics, geochemistry, sampling, remote sensing, drilling)
Interpret resulting geological and analytical data and information and make recommendations for further work
Establish technical milestones and monitor project progress to enable continual project progress and prioritisation
Lead a multi-disciplinary project team to ensure high performance and an inclusive environment in which all team members are able to participate and contribute to continuous improvement.
Undertake effective project planning with full consideration of contingencies, resourcing, schedules etc.
Effectively manage project budgets
Manage contractors and service providers through the contracting process and delivery on the ground in accordance with RT standards
Manage all HSEC, assurance and compliance related activities to ensure standards are met by setting and monitoring objectives and anticipating and managing current and future risks.
Engage with a range external stakeholders within the region including government and non-government agencies, industry representatives and community groups to develop strong relationships and further develop RT reputation and operations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Tertiary qualification in geoscience or related field
Minimum 8 years relevant experience with a focus on managing complex exploration projects
Zambian national (or with Zambian working rights)
Experience of exploring for sedimentary copper systems
Highly proficient in English (verbal and written)
Commitment to safe work practices.
Driving licence and desire to spend time in the field
TECHNICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
The incumbent will be expected to have the following competencies;
A passion for discovery
Strong knowledge of sedimentary copper deposits including geology, vectors to mineralisation and exploration methodologies together with a broader knowledge of best exploration practices
Ability to analyse and interpret technical, fiscal, legal, commercial, economic, community and corporate issues that impact on the successful delivery of projects
Ability to solve complex technical, operational and leadership problems through clear thinking, communication and innovation
Ability to engage appropriately with a range of external and internal stakeholders to develop relationships that support RTX’s business operations
Sound leadership skills including the ability to manage and develop a cohesive, high performing team comprising a range of cross cultural, professional and technical staff and contractors
Well-developed operational management and project management skills to plan, manage and deliver complex projects
This is a permanent role.
