The Indaba Agriculture Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) is a leading Zambian and Regional Think Tank. It carries out high quality research in the agricultural sector, and communicates the results of this research to policy makers and other stakeholders. The purpose is to contribute to the development and implementation of better agricultural policy in Zambia.

Communications Specialist
Job Description
IAPRI seeks to hire a Zambian national with advanced skills in using media and other tools to communicate technical messages, to fill the newly created position of Communications Specialist. The Communications Specialist will advise other employees (mainly researchers) and managers on communication tasks and techniques, and use written and verbal skills to create a wide range of products and corporate communication materials.
The Communications Specialist will be the IAPRI’s activity hub concerning tasks that involve communication with different target audiences, including internal IAPRI staff, journalists, stakeholders, policy-makers and the community.
Strategic Purpose
The purpose of the job is to contribute to the delivery of the following strategic objectives:
• To raise the profile and reputation of IAPRI as a World Class Agricultural Policy Think Tank; and
• To contribute to the development and implementation of strategies for using IAPRI research evidence and knowledge to influence better policy results for Zambia.
The following duties and responsibilities are intended to deliver this contribution.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Enable the assembly of superior video, print, web-based, photographic, and print materials for operative stakeholder, donor and civic discourse.
• Put into effect the active and intensive use of social media to communicate and engage with stakeholders and audiences.
• Contribute to the production of IAPRI Newsletters both physical and electronic
• Contribute to the production of IAPRI’s banners and corporate regalia in conformity with IAPRI’s brand policy.
• Assist with the preparation of press releases and media briefs (print and electronic)
• Work with the Web Manager to update website content and other media platforms
• Regularly track, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of IAPRI’s communication tools and inform the Outreach Directorate and management of the processes.
• Track and monitor press appearances of IAPRI work and also track and monitor press events that are relevant to IAPRI’s work.
• Build positive relationships between IAPRI and key actors (editors and others) in the Media.
• Assist in the organization of all IAPRI events such as conferences, television and radio appearances
• Provide support to IAPRI researchers in their task of briefing the media, and in their efforts to become more effective communicators of the results and implications of their work.
• Work with the M & E Unit to prepare stories about the impact of IAPRI’s work
• Perform any other lawful duties as may be assigned by the Outreach Director and/or the Executive Director.

• Television and radio documentaries and programs.
• Print media articles and products
• Newsletters.
• Conferences and media appearances.
• Press releases and social media products and results.
• IAPRI regalia.
Qualifications and Experience
• Degree in Communication Science, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing. Note that a Masters in the Communication Science, Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing will be an added advantage.
• At least 5 years of experience working with communications, public relations or journalism.
• Demonstrate a deep understanding of Zambia’s media and how to utilize it effectively
• Experience in the production of print and electronic media products
Other Desirable Qualifications
• Having good public relations and media network connections.
• Show evidence of good writing and verbal skills
