Research Fellow, Climate Change

The Indaba Agriculture Policy Research Institute (IAPRI) is a leading Zambian and Regional Think Tank. It carries out high quality research in the agricultural sector, and communicates the results of this research to policy makers and other stakeholders. The purpose is to contribute to the development and implementation of better agricultural policy in Zambia.

Research Fellow, Climate Change
Reporting to: Director of Research
Job Description
IAPRI seeks to hire an outstanding individual (preferably a Zambian National), with strong commitment and potential to bring a significant contribution to the activities of the Institute in the field of environment, Climate change and Natural Resource. The Research Fellow (hereafter RF) will lead in developing and implementing policy-oriented research work related to environment, climate change,land and natural resources management. Furthermore, the RF will conduct studies and analyze a wide range of environmental policy and natural resources management issues to help IAPRI achieve its goals and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to and under the supervision of the Director of Research, the RF will:
• Undertake innovative research on the development and application of economic methods to inform sustainable policies for environmental conservation, climate change, land management and natural resources management.
• Write and publish articles in high quality peer-reviewed journals, as well as contribute regularly to IAPRI’s working paper and policy brief series
• Communicate research findings to a broad spectrum of stakeholders (policymakers, scientists, practitioners, private sector, etc.)
• Provide strong leadership in developing new research ideas into viable proposals
• Prepare proposals for funding in natural resource management and climate change research
• Contribute to technical reporting on various project, proposal development and any other duties within the scope of work.
• Create linkages with external collaborators.
• Design and implement capacity-strengthening activities for IAPRI research staff in environmental conservation, climate change, land and natural resources management
• Provide supervision and mentorship for research support staff.
• Represent IAPRI at key stakeholder meetings and conferences.
• Perform any other lawful duties as may be assigned by the Director of Research and/or the Executive Director of IAPRI

• IAPRI working papers, policy briefs/advisory notes and technical reports
• Peer reviewed journal articles
• Infographics, presentations
• Capacity strengthening training materials
• Funding proposals
Qualifications and Experience:
• Minimum of a PhD degree in environmental and natural resources economics, international environmental science, agricultural economics or a related discipline;
• At least 3 years of relevant work experience in policy analysis relating to environmental policy, climate change and natural resources management, land management and conservation,preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa;
• Knowledge of the principles, theories and tools for the analysis related to climate change, natural resources management, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection;
• Strong peer-reviewed publication record;
• Strong analytical and technical background in quantitative research methods and data analysis;
• Excellent writing, presentation and communication skills, with fluency in both oral and written English;
• Ability to communicate effectively with policy makers using a range of media;
• Demonstrated experience in writing funding proposals and forging partnerships with international agencies, national institutions and NGOs.
Other Desirable Qualifications
• Demonstrated experience with quantitative methods (i.e. statistics, econometrics), including the use of statistical software applications such as STATA, SPSS or the R programming language
• Ability to perform advanced geospatial analysis using a Geographic Information System (GIS)
